Tutorial One: : Information Technology and Ethical Issues

Tutorial one involved getting the gist of Information Technology and the ethical issues that surround its use. Below are the technical description questions which were asked to be completed.

Provide a definition of Information Technology/Information Communications Technology (APA reference required)
Information technology is a field of engineering which deals with the retreival, storage and transmission of information via the use of computers and other telecommunication devices.

Princeton University. (2010). WordNet. Retrieved from http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=information%20technology

Consider the definition of IT you have provided. How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?
Computers and telecommunication devices such as mobiles, ipods, blackberries etc have become part of our everyday lives. Most homes will have a telephone or computer. Most businesses require computers, telephones, mobiles to run successfully. We are living in an information technology age, where we are able to find out any information we desire with the click of a mouse, or the push of a button….instant access!

What IT devices or system do you feel comfortable and competent using?
I use a range of varying IT devices in my day to day life. Desktop computers, laptops, mobile phones, IP telephone, mp3 player, NavMan.

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences consider how IT is being used in Occupational Therapy practice?
IT devices were used during FW 1 were computers, laptops, and projectors, these were mainly used for emailing, research, writing up clinical notes, during inservices, and MDT meetings. Mobiles, telephones and fax machines were also used to communicate within the service as well as to other service providers. FW 2 saw IT devices used in a school setting. Desktop computers were set up with education software for the students to partake in using. A desktop was also connect to a SMARTboard which allowed both teachers and students to interact with the SMARTboard at the front of the class.

What ethical implications arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (e.g. mobile phones) or systems (e.g. internet)
There is no “policing” as such over what can be captured on a mobile phone, particularly those with photograph and video capabilities. This means that anything can be uploaded and broadcasted over the internet. Only a persons’ morals and beliefs can dictate whether or not they will share captured media on the internet or not.

Provide a definition of Computer Ethics (APA reference required)
“A set of moral principles which regulate the use of computers”

Tech Terms Dictionary. (2010). Computer Ethics. Retrieved from http://www.techterms.com/definition/computerethics

Provide a definition of Intellectual Property (APA reference required)
Creative property that is intangible Eg copyrights, trademarks etc.

Princeton University. (2010). WordNet. Retrieved from http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=intellectual%20property

Provide a definition of Social Justice (APA reference required)
Is the notion that society gives individuals and groups fair treatment and and equality within society. It is based on the concepts of human rights and equity. All groups and individuals are entitled to important rights such as health protection and minimal standards of income.

Public Health Agency of Canada. (2008). Glossary of the Terms Relevant to Core Competencies for Public Health. Retrieved from http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/ccph-cesp/glos-r-z-eng.php

Provide a definition of Informed Consent (APA reference required)
When a patient consents to partake in medical or surgical treatment, or in the participation of an experiment, made when a patient understands the risks involved.

Princeton University. (2010). WordNet. Retrieved from http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=informed%20consent

In your own words briefly summarise why (or why not) a great understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our practice and daily lives.
I believe ITC has a huge place in OT practice as well as our daily lives. We are able to engage patients through a different medium. Certain IT devices could facilitate treatment as memory aids etc, as leisure and productivity. IT allows us as practioners to keep up to date within OT. Understanding the ethical issues ensures that we are safe in our practice.
